What Is a Certified Arborist?

Certified Arborists are individuals who have demonstrated a high level of knowledge in the art and science of tree care through practical experience and by passing a comprehensive examination developed by some of the nation’s leading tree care experts. To maintain their certification, Certified Arborists must pursue ongoing education and adhere to a strict Code of Ethics. As a result, they are more likely to stay current with the latest techniques and best practices in arboriculture.

Becoming an ISA Certified Arborist is a voluntary process that allows individuals to validate their knowledge and competence in providing proper tree care. ISA Certification is not sponsored or endorsed by any government agency; rather, it is administered by the International Society of Arboriculture as a means for tree care professionals to demonstrate their commitment to industry standards, continuous learning, and responsible tree management.

This certification gives clients and employers confidence that the arborist possesses the expertise, skills, and ethical standards necessary to perform tree care safely and effectively.

Why Hire an Arborist?

Proper tree care is an investment that can lead to substantial returns. Well-maintained trees enhance the beauty of your landscape and can significantly increase property value. On the other hand, neglected or improperly maintained trees can become liabilities—posing safety risks to people, structures, and utilities.

Arborists are trained professionals who specialize in the care of individual trees. Certified Arborists, in particular, have demonstrated their knowledge and expertise by passing a rigorous exam and meeting professional experience requirements set by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). They are also committed to ongoing education and must adhere to a Code of Ethics, ensuring they stay up to date with the latest industry standards and techniques.

Tree work—especially tasks like pruning or removing large trees—is inherently dangerous and should only be performed by individuals who are properly trained and equipped to do the job safely. Hiring an ISA Certified Arborist ensures that your trees are cared for by someone with the knowledge, skills, and tools to do the job correctly and safely.

Whether you’re looking to preserve the health of your trees, enhance curb appeal, or reduce risk, working with a Certified Arborist is the best way to protect your investment and promote a safe, beautiful environment.
